Record What Would Change Your Confidence Before You Commit

Confidence becomes easier to inspect when it is recorded before the outcome is known. A small judgment log captures what you expected, why you believed it, what remained uncertain, and which observable condition would have made you update. Later, compare that record with what actually happened.
1. State the judgment and confidence
Write the prediction, interpretation or commitment in a form you can revisit. Label confidence in ordinary language such as low, mixed, or high when that is sufficient. Avoid adding numeric precision merely because the field allows it.
2. Separate support from unknowns
List the strongest reason for the current judgment and the missing fact or dependency that could matter most. This makes it possible to see later whether the outcome differed because the reasoning was weak or because an important condition changed.
3. Name what would change the judgment
Choose one observable condition that would make you reconsider, ask for more information, reduce the commitment, or choose another path. Prefer a condition tied directly to the decision rather than a vague feeling of greater certainty.
4. Compare the record with what happened
When the outcome or missing information arrives, revisit the original entry. Note which assumption held, which failed, and what type of uncertainty should receive more attention in the next comparable decision.
Questions to consider
Do I need to assign a numeric probability?
No. Use a qualitative label if a number would imply precision you do not have. The important part is making the reason for your confidence and the condition for updating explicit.
What makes a good update condition?
Use something observable that would materially change the decision: an approval, missing input, test result from your own process, confirmed dependency, deadline change, customer response, or another concrete event relevant to the judgment.
What if the outcome was different because the plan changed?
Record the changed condition instead of scoring the original judgment as though nothing changed. The purpose is to improve the model of the situation, including which assumptions and dependencies were unstable.
