Attempt First, Use AI for Feedback, Retest Without It
Keep the cognitive work you are trying to learn on your side of the conversation

Try this
Name the skill you are actually trying to acquire. Attempt a problem, explanation, translation, derivation, or answer unaided. Ask AI to identify gaps, give a contrasting example, or explain one sticking point. Check the feedback against trusted material when accuracy matters, then perform a fresh attempt without AI.

Review note: Reviewed against the 2026 systematic review/meta-analysis plus the cited 2025 RCT. The review found no stable overall positive learning effect after robust publication-bias correction and highlighted heterogeneity plus augmentation/substitution differences. The protocol therefore preserves learner effort and an unaided retest.
If the AI performs the exact thinking you are trying to learn, excellent news for the AI. The learner still needs a turn.
1. Name the target operation
Decide what you want to become able to do: retrieve facts, explain a mechanism, solve a type of problem, write in a language, debug code, or another observable skill.
2. Make a meaningful attempt
Work far enough to expose what you know and where you get stuck. Do not ask AI to erase the diagnostic value of the attempt before it exists.
3. Ask for feedback, not replacement
Request a critique, hint, counterexample, alternative explanation, or one next step. Compare important factual feedback with course material or another trusted source.
4. Retest without the answer
Close the AI response and try a fresh example or explanation. Learning is the part that remains when the generated answer is gone.
Questions to consider
Why attempt before asking AI?
Because if the model performs the exact operation you are trying to learn, the finished answer can hide whether you can perform that operation yourself. The attempt gives you something concrete to compare and correct.
Is AI tutoring proven to improve learning?
Some well-designed studies report strong gains, but a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found extreme heterogeneity and no stable overall positive effect after robust publication-bias correction. Design and retained learner activity matter.
