Conflicting information often produces a binary reaction: defend the existing belief or replace it entirely. A better operational move is to make the claim precise and ask what strong, relevant information could change its boundary. The goal is an explicit update, not a ritual of collecting equal amounts of material for opposing positions.
1. Write the claim you actually hold
Turn the broad belief into a statement specific enough to inspect. Include the context or boundary that matters. Avoid words such as always or never unless the claim truly depends on a universal condition.
2. Define what could materially challenge it
Before searching for confirming material, state what kind of counter-information would matter: a directly comparable case, a stronger source, a missing variable, a failed assumption, a different boundary, or a credible alternative explanation.
3. Compare the strongest relevant material
Check whether sources address the same question, rely on independent underlying material, expose enough context to inspect the claim, and remain applicable to the situation at hand. Do not count repeated copies of one claim as independent support.
4. Record the update explicitly
Keep the claim when the challenge does not materially change it, narrow it when a boundary becomes clearer, or revise it when the central assumption no longer holds. Record what changed and which uncertainty remains instead of pretending the disagreement has been completely resolved.

Does this mean giving both sides equal weight?
No. The purpose is to seek a serious challenge to your current view, not to balance strong information with a weak counterclaim. Weight material by directness, relevance, independence and traceability to the question.
What if the topic is medical, legal, financial or otherwise high stakes?
Use authoritative domain sources and qualified professional support where appropriate. This protocol can help structure the question, but it is not a substitute for the standards or expertise required by a high-stakes decision.
What if the counter-information changes only part of the claim?
Narrow the claim instead of forcing a complete reversal. Record which population, condition, timeframe, mechanism, exception or boundary changed so the updated statement is more precise than the one you started with.
