Pause a Heated Disagreement and Test One Claim
Defuse the Backfire Effect

Notice that you are defending rather than examining. Pause before replying. Restate the other person's claim in words they accept, then state your own position and uncertainty. Ask what information would change either view. Choose one concrete check, or stop when the exchange is no longer productive or safe.

1. Pause and restate one claim
Notice interruption, repetition or urge to prove. Pause, then describe the other person's claim without ridicule or exaggeration. Ask whether your restatement is accurate.
2. State what could change the view
Separate what you believe, what you know directly and what remains unclear. Ask what observation, record or outcome would matter, and state your own change condition.
3. Choose one check or stop
Inspect one source, run one reversible test, ask a qualified person or defer the decision. Stop when the exchange no longer serves understanding, action or safety.
Questions to consider
Do I need to continue every disagreement?
No. Stop when the exchange becomes unsafe, repetitive or unrelated to a decision that matters. A boundary can be more useful than another argument.
Does restating a claim mean I agree with it?
No. It shows that you understand the claim well enough to discuss it. You can still reject it after the meaning is clear.
What if no practical check is available?
Record the unresolved point, make a reversible decision where possible and stop presenting uncertainty as settled fact.
