Sleep regularity is a signal, not yet a prescription.

A recent meta-analysis suggests that greater night-to-night sleep variability is associated with poorer cognitive performance. That is useful evidence for what Brali should study next. It is not enough to publish a rule such as “keep the same bedtime and your cognition will improve.”

What the study found

Xia and colleagues published a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The analysis included 20 published articles, 103 effect sizes, and 15,828 participants. Greater sleep variability was associated with poorer cognitive performance on average. The pooled association was small, and age moderated it, with a stronger association reported in older adults than in adolescents and middle-aged adults.

What this supports

Sleep should not be represented only by average duration. Regularity and night-to-night variability are legitimate dimensions for Brali's Sleep & Circadian Rhythm research Topic. The finding also gives the Research Scout a concrete reason to look for longitudinal and intervention studies that test whether changing sleep regularity changes meaningful outcomes.

What it does not support

The meta-analysis does not establish that irregular sleep causes cognitive decline. It also does not show that forcing a fixed bedtime, keeping sleep within a particular number of minutes, or reducing variability will improve cognition for an individual. An association can arise from reverse causation, common causes, measurement choices, or other differences between people. Brali therefore does not convert this source into a sleep-regularity protocol.

Why publishing a non-protocol matters

A useful knowledge system needs a place for “interesting, but not actionable yet.” Otherwise every paper becomes a tip, and eventually the library is just confident prose wearing citations. Brali keeps evidence decisions separate from protocols precisely to avoid that failure mode.
